Intelligent Data Analytics Platform for Metro Rail Transport

This project proposed and developed an intelligent data analytics platform tailored for metro rail transport systems.

The platform integrates multiple data sources to enable deeper understanding of passenger behavior and system performance.

Research Significance

This work laid the foundation for later transport analytics projects by establishing a system-level approach rather than isolated analysis.

Implementation & Deployment

The platform was successfully tested and deployed within Kochi Metro Rail as part of this research initiative. Key achievements include:

• Distributed Cluster Architecture: Implemented on a distributed computational platform—the first research implementation of this kind in Kerala.
• Analytics Engine: Designed and developed a solid analytics engine using Artificial Intelligence to derive intelligence from automatic fare collection (AFC) ticketing data.
• Research Center: Deployed and tested at Rajagiri Research Center.

Funding & Support

Department of Science & Technology (DST) provided funding of ₹24 lakh over three years. The research was guided by Dr. Jaison Mulerikkal (Vice-Principal, RSET).

Platform Capabilities

The analytics platform is designed to:

• Analyze ticketing data with temporal context
• Identify passenger flow patterns across the network
• Forecast next-day passenger counts at station level
• Support data-driven decision-making by metro authorities
• Identify peak and off-peak demand patterns
• Enable strategic planning to increase ridership and passenger satisfaction

The ultimate objective is to help metro authorities understand and respond to passenger demand, thereby improving service quality and rider experience.

International Conference Presentation

The work was presented at the International Conference on Metro Rail Data in India titled “Unleashing the Power of Data: Advancing Metro Traffic Demand Forecasting,” organized by I-Metro Society (a collective of 18 metros in India) and hosted by DMRC on 13 October 2023 at The Lalit, Delhi.
